~ Dalai Lama
Here are some ways we can make a difference on campus and beyond when it comes to crime and justice issues:
~Join the Crime Club at Le Moyne College!
~Engage in community work (e.g. volunteer at your local domestic/sexual violence agency, homeless shelter, animal shelter, reintegration center, etc.)
~Red Flag Campaign
~Clothesline Project
~Domestic Violence Shelter Holiday Donation Drives
~White Ribbon Campaign
~National Crime Victims' Rights Week Events
~Fundraising for Social Justice
~Activism & Advocacy

~Applied work/Independent studies
...and more!

Examples of applied research/service in the classroom:

-
Coordinator for the Criminology Client Problem-Solving Competition at Le Moyne College – worked to find community partners and engage students in Sociology & Criminology courses through a client problem solving competition. As part of the partnership, I conduct a needs assessment with the community partner, the partner comes to discuss the issues with students, and students work to “solve” the issue using knowledge gained in the course. Examples include work with non-profits such as:
-
HEAL Onondaga County, which focuses on mental health, substance abuse prevention, and wellness; I will work with the nonprofit this summer to plan our partnership/collaboration for the fall with students who will engage in campus activities/outreach. .
-
Friends of Second Chance to learn about rehabilitative programs and “do something” to help the nonprofit with raising awareness, donation drives, etc.
-
The Central New York Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CNY SPCA) whereby students are researching issues and creating training workshops aimed to bring the gap between SPCA staff, law enforcement, and mental health provider (see: https://www.localsyr.com/news/local-news/le-moyne-classes-challenge-students-to-find-solutions-for-local-non-profits/1462283001 Le Moyne classes challenge students to find solutions for local non-profits)
-
Vera House (domestic/sexual violence agency) to assess emergency shelter services, victim advocacy, and therapy programs
-
The Center for Community Alternatives (CCA) to provide support to formerly incarcerated persons and tackle issues of attrition in programs, thereby promoting services associated with effective reintegration
-
